Hiking

"The perfect place to let your eyes wander" while you are hiking - a good way to describe the experience of hiking on the Buchensteinwand. Magnificent views, well-maintained trails, typical Tirol flora and fauna. The Buchsteinwand is within walking distance of all towns in the Pillerseetal or can be easily accessed by four-seater chairlift. The most popular routes are briefly described here.

Mountain pasture, biking and hiking trails Buchsteinwand

6.2 km, ascent approx. 1 ¼ hours - descent approx. 1 ¾ hours, altitude difference 600 m

Hike over mountain pastures with magnificent flora and spectacular panoramic views. We begin our hike in Flecken and head down the Forststraße in a southerly direction before taking the winding road to Kammbergalm (1,321 m). From here, continue across the slope to the southeast. When you reach the ridge, walk in a westerly direction towards the summit and the Buchsteinwand alpine inn, which is open to the public. It is certainly worth taking a quick detour to the Buchensteinwand reservoir, which features a unique mountain playground.

St. Ulrich - Buchensteinwand - Fieberbrunn - St. Jakob in Haus

Hiking time, including return trip: approx. 5 hours; from the mountain station approx. 3 hours

Starting at the valley station of the Pillersee mountain railway, head towards St. Jakob in Haus until you arrive at the first barn. From here the path leads to the left past the Kröpflliftstüberl, uphill along a forestry road, branching off to the left in the direction of the mountain station Kröpfllift, through trees and meadows to Kröpfalm and along the steep road to the lift at the mountain station Buchsteinwand. You can of course cover the first leg of the journey on the four-seater cable car, if preferred. The mountain station has a magnificent view over the Pillerseetal all the way to the craggy rocks of the Wilder Kaiser. Sometimes, the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Grossglockner can also be spotted from here.

Head across the back of the Buchensteinwan, following the 4SB panoramic train tracks before walking downhill across grazed pastures to Tennalm. From here, continue downhill to Pertrach, then turn right to Schönau across the Inner -and Außergrünbichl to the junction leading towards Rosenegg and across the railway tracks. Keep to right and you will soon arrive at a sign pointing towards Hochegg. From there, head to the right through the woods, across the Rettenbach, onwards to the left past the Mühlau and then along the Wiesenweg in the direction of St. Jakob in Haus and back to the valley station of the Pillersee mountain railway.

St. Ulrich - Kühle Klause - Buchensteinwand

Hiking time approx. 3 hours, altitude difference 600 m.

From the valley station of the Pillersee mountain railway, head towards St. Jakob in Haus to the first barn, then continue uphill to a section of track in the direction of Kröpflliftstüberl, continue along the forest road, then keep to the right towards St. Jakob in Haus - "Kühle Klause", turning left at the first crossroads and continuing along the forest track to the Buchsteinwand. Enjoy typical Tyrolean food at the Buchensteinwand alpine inn. Take the trail downhill across the Kammbergalm to Flecken before finally arriving at St. Ulrich am Pillersee.

Flower identification trail

1.6 km, hiking time approx. ¾ hours; altitude difference 70 m.

This romantic short walk starts at the mountain station and heads in an easterly direction. Many of the trees, shrubs and flowers are described on panels. As some of these plants are very rare, picking them is strictly prohibited. The most beautiful part of the trail runs directly over the crest of the Buchsteinwand. When you reach the reservoir, turn around and head back towards the alpine inn.

Mountain biking

Whether taking a trip to the summit, following a panoramic route or a circular cycle route, mountain bikers will thoroughly enjoy themselves on the Buchensteinwand.

It does not matter whether you are a beginner, professional or enthusiast. Once you are at the right altitude, there are many paths, trails and viewing points to explore and discover. On-trend e-bikes are the perfect choice for inexperienced cyclers and allow them to explore without limitations and enjoy the Buchensteinwand.

E-bikes are available for rental at Intersport Günther right next to the valley station.
